We’re seeking an experienced Battery Cell Design Engineer to join a leading innovator in advanced energy storage technology. In this role, you’ll be responsible for developing customised lithium-ion cells to meet the unique requirements of diverse customers and applications from automotive, energy storage, power tools, robotics, medical devices, and aerospace systems.
This role combines deep technical design work with direct customer interaction. You’ll be responsible for translating application requirements into practical cell designs, supporting prototype development, and ensuring each solution meets performance, safety, and manufacturability targets.
You will work closely with materials scientists, process engineers, and customers’ technical teams to define specifications, refine designs, and guide development through to validation. The position requires strong technical grounding, sound judgement, and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, model, and develop custom battery cells across multiple chemistries and form factors.
- Engage directly with customers to capture requirements and translate them into cell design parameters.
- Support prototype builds, testing, and validation to ensure designs meet customer and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with teams in materials, process, pack, and system engineering to ensure seamless integration.
- Deliver technical documentation, design proposals, and progress reports to customers.
- Drive continuous improvement in cell performance, safety, and manufacturability.
About You
- Degree (or higher) in Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Proven experience in cell design and development for lithium-ion or similar chemistries.
- Strong understanding of electrode formulation, separator selection, electrolyte compatibility, and cell architecture.
- Demonstrated experience in customer engagement, technical discussions, and project delivery.
- Ability to balance innovation with practicality – designing for both performance and manufacturability.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
